This workshop incorporates two of the nine advances included in three of the main ELA SHIFTS. Focusing on ACADEMIC VOCABULARY is one of the shifts that needs to occur in order to implement the New Illinois Learning Standards for ELA. During the workshop, participants will learn what is academic vocabulary, why we would focus on academic vocabulary vs. content vocabulary, and how to teach academic vocabulary using Marzano's 6-step approach. NARRATIVE WRITING is also, one of the shifts. Participants will leave with a better understanding of writing K-5 and 6-12, as well as strategies which incorporate the New Illinois Learning Standards and can be applied to ELA and to all content area subjects. The types of writing covered will be narrative, including descriptive, informational, and argumentative.
